O Bottom Line: I remember trying this one when it was first launched and liking the freshness and floral aspects of it, but not liking a particular note that just seemed out of place to my nose. Fast forward para 2004 when after a couple of years living in Japan I had realized that Alain Delon Samourai was the Japanese equivalent of Armani’s Acqua di Giothe scent was everywhere! Being unable to escape this little glass bottle with the silver cap and blue juice, I re-visited it and tried wearing it myself. Surprise, sorpresa – nine years of sniffing led me to be able to more closely pick out the individual notes, or at least the one note that had bugged me – estragão! Only this time around, the note didn’t bug me so much as it intrigued me. Placing a tarragon note amongst an otherwise floral bouquet (set against the typical vetiver, sándalo, and cedar trio) brings a unique edge to Samourai, something slightly herbaceous and astringent. This is what truly sets the scent aside from the thousand other 90′s “fresh” perfumes. Though it was once on sale everywhere for as little as $10 EUA, it seems to have disappeared recently in the USA and the prices are inching up. In Japan, con todo, this scent was so poular that it actually spun off its own brand of bath and body products and still relaunches with some variation (Gold, Aqua, etc) almost every year. Light, sparkling, perfect for warmer weather, and with a price that is still easy on the wallet, Alain Delon’s Samourai for Men is currently a winning bargain!
