결론: If you're looking for a departure from the current marine, 향, or gourmand offerings at your local fragrance counter, and you love citrus and leather, go retro with a bottle of Ferre's still-sophisticated and reasonably-priced men's classic. One of our PerfumeCritic readers turned me onto this scent some months ago by requesting a review and it had been years since I'd smelled Ferre; I didn't remember it fondly (I think I often confuse Ferre Man and Versace pour Homme as both are ambery orientals that came out within a couple years of each other). I tried to track this down for a sniff, but it's generally not available at local department stores or Sephora anymore. I thought about going over to Scentiments to test it, but after reading the nearly unanimous praise heaped on Ferre for Man by Basenotes reviewers, I went ahead and splurged and ordered the entire bottle from them un-sniffed.
When I first sprayed the scent, I was surprised by the fresh citrus and overall lightness of the composition. I had been expecting "dark and heavy" after reading the list of notes. The next surprise came as the vetiver and amber notes merged to create a seamlessly blended almost leathery bouquet of basenotes. Being a huge fan of leather, I was pleasantly surprised by the effect: Though it's not the main focus of the composition, it's definitely one of the key players. To boot, there's something slightly old world about Ferre; I can imagine this as a Crown or Trumper scent with its fougere notes of lavender in the top. And then there is the oakmoss (though not listed, it has gotta be one of the notes)….아, oakmoss. You seem to be an unexpected yet constant companion lately – Givenchy Insense, Creed Irisia…The oakmoss (and vetiver…I think they support each other) is by far the most interesting aspect of the fragrance, creating an almost bitter dryness that stands in excellent contrast to the warmth of the ambery drydown.
전체, a surprisingly good fragrance, I can see why Ferre for Man has stuck around all these years. Though Ferre for Man is now 25 세, for me it's a new classic.
