Hæ Arlen,
Ég veit að þú ert tilbúin til að gefa ráð, þannig að ég hélt að ég myndi gefa það a skot! I’m looking for a birthday present for my girlfriend, og ég hélt að ilmvatn væri gaman þar sem við erum bæði stór á að taka á ilmur. Hins vegar, I’m having a pretty tough time picking out something for her. She wears Victoria’s Secret Heavenly (which I like, though it’s very subtle) and Thierry Mugler’s Angel (I’m not big on this, but she says it relaxes her). I looked at some reviews on your site and headed to Sephora, where I found having 10 assistants swarm around you renders research useless. Anyway, I found that I like Badgley Mischka and Betsey Johnson, but probably not well enough to buy. Do you have any ideas what to look at next?
Thanks a lot,
J
Hey J!
Sorry for the late reply, buddy…. Einhvern veginn, sounds like you and your girlfriend might have some slightly differing tastes. The best thing to do is to get a bunch of samples, and Sephora and Nordstrom are usually pretty good at offering these (also check out Luckyscent.com, Aeds.com, and Beautycafe.com). Pick out about 10 things you like from each shop and ask for samples. Let them know that you’ll be giving them to your girlfriend in the hopes of her choosing one you like so that you can come back and buy the whole bottle – they may have original carded samples direct from the fragrance companies to offer, or will just hand-decant them for you into little glass or plastic vials like the ones you see below. I recommend that you ask them to use labels to help you remember which vial is which, aftur, like the image below, as sometimes the samples get loose from their paper cards and you’re left to guess just which scent is which!
Then find a little silk pouch (any good shop with gift wrap should have a bunch of options for you, or try a dollar store) and put them all inside. This will make a great bday extra and will give both you and she the chance to experience a range of aromas together. Hopefully you’ll agree on a fragrance that will make you both happy and with winter holidays just around the corner, you’ll have the perfect gift idea already in mind!
If that doesn’t quite meet your expectations, here are a list of some outstanding fragrances in various price ranges that should be available at most department stores. I’ve chosen them because of their similarity to Angel:
-
Diesel Fuel for Life for Her – Not as much patchouli (that’s the somewhat herbal lingering edge of Angel that many don’t care for) and slightly fruitier than Angel; check Amazon.com for discounted prices.
-
Bond #9, Nuits de Noho – Similar in feel to Angel, but doesn’t have the same powdery, caramelized finish. This one is often found online at discounts, just google it!
-
Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb – More floral and not as foody; might be more in line with
what you enjoy.
Að auki, there are now a number of variations on the original Angel, such as Angel Innocent (mjúkur, honeyed, vanilla tones), Angel Eau de Star (like the scent of Angel wafting on an ocean breeze), and three floral variations: Rose, Violet, and Pivoine (peony). All can be found at great discount prices at BigDiscount.com. Don’t overlook Thierry Mugler’s Alien (at right). Although controversial, his second major women’s fragrance focuses on sweet, dewy jasmine and amber.
Að lokum, for a surprise low-price alternative, try Yves Rocher’s Neonatura Coccoon – ridiculously cheap when YR has its sales, and incredibly good. Has the gourmet feel of Angel with its patchouli, vanilla and chocolate without all the sweet fruity tones. Trial sized travel sprays and shower gels are as low as $1!
Hope this helps!
Marlen
